During the last decade, most Latin American countries have undergone a transformation from highly centralized and regulated, protectionistic economies to models of free market enterprise. Led by the example of the Chilean reforms in the 1980's, most countries have moved to privatize significant portions of their economy. This process is ongoing and is likely to continue for at least another decade, especially in four areas: energy, telecommunications & I.T., infrastructure development, and financial services and capital markets.
